The term is used to cover several types of object, including tablet shaped objects with text or carved images. However, its most important application with across the British Museum collection is in the context of cuneiform tablets, where it refers to a shaped piece of clay (or less commonly, stone) with a cuneiform inscription. Usually rectangular or rounded in shape, and often with a flat obverse and convex reverse.’ Properly differentiated from other cuneiform text vehicles such as prisms, cylinders, dedicatory cones etc. See also 'writing-tablet'.
