During the early 1970s the Asahi Newspaper produced a series of politically charged photographic reportages on Okinawa, the atomic bomb and its after-effects, pollution, unemployment, and other concerns. All of them were produced by a single staff photographer with a particular interest in the subject. Kurihara (born 1937) won the Japan Photographic Society Newcomer's prize in 1962. Okinawa had been designated as 'a keystone of the Pacific' and the 118 military bases on the island left little room to doubt American commitment. Only two copies in OCLC. (Titus Boeder, 4/07)
